fsociety
This unit, we did an artwork with a printmaking format. The subject is the man that is holding the money with the top hat. The title is: fsociety. I think the most obvious art element in this piece is the black and white contrast, there is also balance and texture and lines present. For this unit we used the printmaking process. We drew out our idea, put in on a piece of linoleum. Then, after we determine what will be black and what won’t, we start to carve out the parts that are supposed to be white. After carving is done, you start the printmaking process. Putting the ink on your block, then transferring it to paper. I got my inspiration from Jean-Michel Basquiat. He was an activist and an artist and used mainly graffiti to protest things he believed in. In this piece, I am protesting corporate greed, and honestly how much we let money ruin our lives. I hate that there are so many in our society, including most people in our government, that care about money more than they care about anything else. It shouldn’t be that way, but the USA is honestly just a big business. Through the evil looking monopoly man holding money, with fsociety sitting there in the corner, I tried to express that money is evil, which I think I accomplished.
My goals as an artist are to share stories whether it’s mine or someone else's, and to make my opinion known in the only way i know how. With this piece, I wanted to express my frustration with everyone being so obsessed about money. This artwork helped my goals because it tells a story and expresses an opinion of mine. I learned how freeing and important it is to have some sort of platform for your opinions, whether it’s through words, art, anything. This art is exactly what I wanted it to be, it looks just like i had imagined it, and although I had a hard time getting the final ink to paper, I still did my best and am pleased with the result. This artwork was a new platform and topic which made me grow even if it was in a small way, it helped me with my quest to become a better artist.

Blue October
Artist Statement- Unit 2: Identity and Self
For my self portrait I only used the colors blue and orange. I am the subject of this particular piece. I used contrast between the colors, the orange and the blue. I used value and shading to create shade and light. Colors are really what makes this come together. For this art piece, I used colored pencils. I used shading techniques such as cross hatching. I used different shades of the two colors to create a more realistic feel to the art. My eyes are blue so I used blue there, and my hair is a blondish red so orange fit well there. I gathered inspiration from Frida Kahlo and the fact that she would make a new self portrait depicting who she feels she is at that point of her life. I think this portrait shows the issue I have with feeling blue. My theme really is just how I feel. I was showing in my facial expression and through the main color I used, blue, who I feel I am right now. My goals as an artist are to share stories whether its mine or someone else. I was attempting to show a piece of my story with this art. I’ve struggled with mental health for most of my life, and still struggle with it now. It’s a huge part of my story, and a part of who I am at this stage of my life. By expressing part of my story, I am accomplishing my goals. I learned that expressing myself through my art, and working hard on it, is a really important tool for me to have. I think this piece came out better than I could have imagined, and I’m proud of it. This built my confidence and for future art I hope I won’t be as timid to just go for it and make my own piece.

A Safe Place
Artist Statement - Unit 1: Place and Environment
My artwork is a soft, textured, contrasting piece. The subject intended was the silhouette of a man, in front of a soft, colorful background. The title of this art piece is: A Safe Place. My most obvious principals and elements in this are the contrast, between the light color and the black, and shapes. For this piece I used chalk pastels. To get this to look like the picture, I used the grid techniche. I first gridded my picture, then did that to the paper my art went on, and that is the way I got the proportions the same from the small picture to the big paper, then I drew it and went in with the pastel. I got my inspiration from the time I saw my favorite band, The Killers, live. I stood outside in 40 degree weather with cold winds for 7 hours to get close to the stage. It was worth it because it was a fantastic spot. This artwork is very personal. Knowing I was going to go to see my favorite band, a band that had already been with me through a lot of hard times, was the only thing that was motivating me to even get out of bed. This was such an important day for me, when they came out on stage it felt as though everything that had been weighing me down just went away. I was attempting to express something that is important for me, and in this particular art piece it happened to be a place of comfort and happiness. I just tried to capture the moment as best I could, because I remember it, it was very emotional, and beautiful. My goals as an artist is just to express stories and things that are important to me. I was attempting to accomplish a very personal, and emotional event that I went through. This piece did help me achieve my goal, because it expressed something that was personal to me. I learned just how important seeing live music is, concerts are such a happy and safe place. It’s a place for all people to go, and no matter what they’re going through dance their worries and sorrows away. The final piece is about what I thought it would turn out to be, I maybe should’ve planned out my media better, but the pastels certainly worked out. This artwork helped me realize how important it is for art to be a reflection of something personal for me, or to be about something I believe in, or something I feel. I never fully realized that my best work comes from when I am creating something I really care about, rather than just something I have to do, or feel like I should do.
